A Material World

Blaine Brownell will give the opening talk of the Rice Design Alliance 2010 Fall Lecture Series on Wednesday, October 6. Entitled “A Material World,” the series will explore the breadth of influences exerted by emerging materials on contemporary design practice. The lecture will be held at 7:00 pm in Brown Auditorium, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas.

Material use and understanding has increasingly become more directly linked to architectural practice and to architectural education. The tactile and aesthetic qualities of materials have always been of comparable measure to design, construction and architectural experience. But now, emergent materials and their associated technologies are rapidly altering the way designers work and the way end-users engage buildings. This series seeks to address the ever-expanding world of materials and their incorporation into our built environment.
